Posted by Dave Colvin on Wednesday, June 14th, 2017

The recent accident on the QEW in St. Catharines caused an evacuation and shelter-in-place order. Would you know what to do in this situation? Your family?

When something hazardous presents a risk to the community and the environment, emergency response agencies will determine whether there is a need to evacuate the area or shelter-in-place. That message will be communicated through local media, social media, and by door-to-door as appropriate. Often it is much safer to stay indoors and take safety precautions to protect your family. Take some time to consider possible risks around you such as the ammonia nurse tanks, dairy, arena or refrigeration operations with ammonia tanks, pools with chlorine, rail and highway corridors, or other possible locations for hazardous materials. Even a major fire can produce smoke and vapour that can me dangers.
